عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لا تُكْثِرُوا الْكَلامَ بِغَيْرِ ذِكْرِ اللّهِ، فَإنَّ كَثْرَةَ الْكَلامِ بِغَيْرِ ذِكْرِ اللّهِ تَعَالَى قَسْوَةٌ لِلْقَلْبِ، وَإِنَّ أَبْعَدَ النَّاسِ مِنَ اللّهِ الْقَلْبُ الْقَاسِي» رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not speak much without the remembrance of Allah, for much speech without the remembrance of Allah the Exalted hardens the heart, and the farthest of people from Allah is the hard heart." Reported by al-Tirmidhi.

قسوة القلب: غلظ القلب وعدم تأثره بالمواعظ.
"Hardness of the heart": coarseness of the heart and its being unmoved by admonitions.

أنّ كثرة الكلام فيما لا فائدة فيه سبب لقسوة القلب والبعد عن رحمة اللّه تعالى. أنّ الإكثار من الكلام مذموم إلّا ما كان فيه فائدة دنيوية أو أخروية.
That much speech in what has no benefit is a cause of hardness of the heart and of distance from the mercy of Allah the Exalted. That excessive speech is blameworthy, except what contains a benefit, whether worldly or otherworldly.
