Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey in which the people suffered hardship. Abdullah ibn Ubayy said: "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse." And he said: "If we return to Medina, the mightier will surely expel the weaker from it." So I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of that. He sent for Abdullah ibn Ubayy, who swore emphatically that he had not done so. So they said: "Zayd has lied about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." I was deeply distressed by what they said, until Allah the Exalted sent down the confirmation of my truthfulness: "When the hypocrites come to you" [Surah al-Munafiqun: 1]. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called them so that he might seek forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads away. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
