عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «أَلا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ مَا الْعَضْهُ؟ هِيَ النَّمِيمَةُ، القَالَةُ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not inform you what al-adh is? It is talebearing—the tattle carried about among people." Reported by Muslim.

الْعَضْهُ: وَرُوِيَ الْعِضَةُ وَهِيَ الْكَذِبُ وَالْبُهْتَانُ. القالة: اسم للقول الفاشي في الناس، خيرًا كان أوشرًّا
"al-adh": also narrated as "al-idah"; it means lying and calumny. "al-qalah": a term for talk that spreads among people, whether good or evil.
