Riyad Al Salihin

Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Among the things the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would frequently say to his Companions was: "Has any of you seen a dream?" And whoever Allah willed to relate one would relate it to him. One morning he said to us: "During the night two men came to me and said to me: 'Set forth,' so I set forth with them. We came upon a man lying down, with another standing over him with a rock, and he would hurl the rock at his head, crushing it. The stone would roll away here, and he would follow it and pick it up, and he would not return to him until his head had healed and become as it was; then he would come back to him and do to him just as he had done the first time." He said: "I said to them: 'Glory be to Allah! What is this?' They said to me: 'Go on, go on.' So we went on, and we came upon a man lying on his back, with another standing over him with an iron hook; he would come to one side of his face and rip his jaw to the back of his neck, his nostril to the back of his neck, and his eye to the back of his neck—then he would move to the other side and do to it just as he had done to the first side. He would not finish with that side before the first side had healed as it was, then he would return to him and do just as he had done the first time." He said: "I said: 'Glory be to Allah! What are these two?' They said to me: 'Go on, go on.' So we went on, and we came upon something like an oven"—I think he said—"and in it was clamor and voices." So we looked into it, and there were naked men and women in it, and a flame would come to them from below them; and when that flame reached them, they would cry out. I said: "What are these?" They said to me: "Go on, go on." So we went on, and we came upon a river"—I think he was saying—"red like blood; and in the river was a man swimming, and on the bank of the river was a man who had gathered many stones beside him. That swimmer would swim as long as he swam, then he would come to the one who had gathered the stones beside him and open his mouth wide, and he would feed him a stone. Then he would go off and swim, then return to him; every time he returned to him, he would open his mouth wide and he would feed him a stone. I said to them: 'What are these two?' They said to me: 'Go on, go on.' So we went on, and we came upon a man of hideous appearance—or the most hideous man in appearance you would ever see—and he had a fire beside him which he was kindling and running around. I said to them: 'What is this?' They said to me: 'Go on, go on.' So we went on, and we came upon a lush, verdant garden containing every color of spring blossom. In the midst of the garden was a very tall man—I could scarcely see his head for his height into the sky—and around the man were more children than I had ever seen. I said: 'What is this, and who are these?' They said to me: 'Go on, go on.' So we went on, and we came to an enormous tree—I had never seen a tree greater or more beautiful than it. They said to me: 'Ascend into it,' so we ascended into it, [and came] to a city built of gold bricks and silver bricks. We came to the gate of the city and asked for it to be opened, and it was opened for us, and we entered it. There we were met by men, half of whose bodies were as beautiful as anything you could see, and half of them as ugly as anything you could see. They said to them: 'Go and plunge into that river.' And behold, it was a broad river flowing, its water as white as pure milk. So they went and plunged into it, then returned to us, and that ugliness had gone from them, and they had become of the most beautiful form." He said: "They said to me: 'This is the Garden of Eden, and this is your dwelling.' My gaze rose upward, and there was a palace like a white cloud. They said to me: 'This is your dwelling.' I said to them: 'May Allah bless you both; let me be, that I may enter it.' They said: 'Not now, but you shall enter it.' I said to them: 'This night I have seen wonders; so what is this that I have seen?' They said to me: 'We shall indeed inform you. As for the first man you came upon, whose head was being crushed with the rock—he is the man who takes the Qur'an and rejects it, and sleeps through the prescribed prayer. As for the man you came upon whose jaw was ripped to the back of his neck, his nostril to the back of his neck, and his eye to the back of his neck—he is the man who goes out from his house and utters a lie that reaches the horizons. As for the naked men and women who were in the likeness of the oven's structure—they are the male and female fornicators. As for the man you came upon swimming in the river and being fed stones—he is the devourer of usury. As for the hideous-looking man beside the fire, kindling it and running around it—he is Malik, the keeper of Hell. As for the tall man in the garden—he is Abraham. As for the children around him—they are every child who died upon the fitrah (the natural disposition).'" In the narration of al-Barqani: "who was born upon the fitrah." Some of the Muslims said: "O Messenger of Allah, and the children of the polytheists?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And the children of the polytheists too. As for the people, some of whom were beautiful and some of whom were ugly—they are a people who mixed a righteous deed with another that was evil; Allah has pardoned them." Reported by al-Bukhari. In another narration of his: "This night I saw two men who came to me and took me out to a holy land." Then he mentioned it and said: "We went on to an opening like an oven, its top narrow and its bottom wide, with a fire burning beneath it; when it flared up, the people in it rose until they were about to come out, and when it subsided, they returned into it; and in it were naked men and women." And in it: "until we came to a river of blood"—he did not doubt it—"in which a man was standing in the middle of the river, and on the bank of the river was a man with stones before him. The man who was in the river would come forward, and when he wanted to come out, the other man would throw a stone into his mouth and send him back to where he was; and every time he came to get out, he would throw a stone into his mouth, and he would go back as he was." And in it: "So they took me up the tree and brought me into a dwelling—I never saw one more beautiful than it—in which were men, old and young." And in it: "The one you saw whose jaw was being slit—he is a liar who tells a lie, and it is carried from him until it reaches the horizons; so it is done to him until the Day of Resurrection." And in it: "The one you saw whose head was being smashed—he is a man whom Allah taught the Qur'an, but he slept through it at night and did not act upon it by day; so it is done to him until the Day of Resurrection. And the first dwelling you entered is the dwelling of the general body of believers; as for this dwelling, it is the dwelling of the martyrs. I am Gabriel, and this is Michael. Raise your head.' So I raised my head, and above me was something like clouds. They said: 'That is your dwelling.' I said: 'Let me enter my dwelling.' They said: 'There remains for you a lifespan you have not yet completed; had you completed it, you would have come to your dwelling.'" Reported by al-Bukhari.
