عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْحَسَدَ، فَإنَّ الْحَسَدَ يَأكُلُ الْحَسَنَاتِ كَمَا تَأكُلُ النَّارُ الْحَطَبَ» أَوْ قَالَ «العُشْبَ» رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of envy, for envy devours good deeds as fire devours firewood"—or he said "grass." Reported by Abu Dawud.
الشرح · explanation
إياكم والحسد: أي احذروا الحسد، وهو تمني زوال النعمة عن صاحبها سواء كانت نعمة دين أو دنيا. يأكل الحسنات: يذهبها.
"Beware of envy": that is, be on your guard against envy, which is wishing for the removal of a blessing from its possessor, whether it be a blessing of religion or of worldly life. "devours good deeds": makes them vanish.
