عَنْ عَبْدِ اللّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «أرْبعٌ مَنْ كُنَّ فيهِ كَانَ مُنَافِقًا خَالِصًا، وَمَنْ كَانَتْ فِيهِ خَصْلَةٌ مِنْهُنَّ كَانَتْ فِيهِ خَصْلَةٌ مِنَ النِّفَاقِ حَتَّى يَدَعَهَا: إِذَا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ، وَإِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ، وَإِذَا عَاهَدَ غَدَرَ، وَإِذَا خَاصَمَ فَجَرَ». مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Four traits, whoever has them is a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of them has one trait of hypocrisy until he abandons it: when he is entrusted, he betrays; when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a covenant, he is treacherous; and when he disputes, he acts wickedly." منافقًا: النفاق هو: مخالفة الظاهر للباطن، هو قسمان: نفاق اعتقاد: وهو إظهار الإسلام وإضمار الكفر، ونفاق عمل: وهو أن يفعل أفعال المنافقين وهو المراد هنا. خصلة: هي الصفة المتأصّلة في النفس. فجَر: بالغ في الخصومة.
"a hypocrite": hypocrisy is the divergence of the outward from the inward. It is of two kinds: hypocrisy of belief, which is displaying Islam while concealing disbelief, and hypocrisy of deed, which is to perform the deeds of the hypocrites, and that is what is meant here. "trait": it is the deeply rooted characteristic in the self. "acts wickedly": he goes to excess in the dispute.

أنّ هذه الصفات من حقّها أن تكون قائمة بالمنافق، فينبغي للمؤمن أن يبتعد ويتنزّه عنها. النفاق خسّة في الطبع وضرر ينعكس على المجتمع.
These traits are such that they properly belong to the hypocrite, so the believer should distance himself and keep far from them. Hypocrisy is baseness of character and a harm that reflects upon society.
