Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Allah the Exalted said: 'I am the most self-sufficient of partners, having no need of association. Whoever does a deed in which he associates another with Me, I abandon him and his act of association.'" Reported by Muslim.
"Associates another with Me in it": that is, he intends to show off to someone other than Allah or to be spoken of, hoping to gain thereby wealth, status, or praise. "I abandon him and his act of association": a figurative expression for the nullification of his reward and his deprivation of its recompense.

The term "association" (shirk) is applied to ostentation (riya'), which is a hidden form of association; although it does not undermine the foundation of faith, it nullifies the reward of the very deeds it accompanies.
