Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The first of people against whom judgment will be pronounced on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who was martyred. He will be brought forward, and Allah will make His blessings known to him, and he will recognize them. He will say: 'What did you do with them?' He will say: 'I fought for Your sake until I was martyred.' He will say: 'You have lied. Rather, you fought so that it would be said [that you are] brave, and so it was said.' Then the order will be given concerning him, and he will be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire. And [there is] a man who acquired knowledge and taught it, and who recited the Qur'an. He will be brought forward, and Allah will make His blessings known to him, and he will recognize them. He will say: 'What did you do with them?' He will say: 'I acquired knowledge and taught it, and I recited the Qur'an for Your sake.' He will say: 'You have lied. Rather, you acquired knowledge so that it would be said [that you are] a scholar, and you recited the Qur'an so that it would be said [that you are] a reciter, and so it was said.' Then the order will be given concerning him, and he will be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire. And [there is] a man upon whom Allah had bestowed abundance and to whom He had given all kinds of wealth. He will be brought forward, and Allah will make His blessings known to him, and he will recognize them. He will say: 'What did you do with them?' He will say: 'I left no path in which You love that [wealth] be spent without spending in it for Your sake.' He will say: 'You have lied. Rather, you did so that it would be said [that you are] generous, and so it was said.' Then the order will be given concerning him, and he will be dragged on his face and then cast into the Fire." Reported by Muslim.

"Against whom judgment will be pronounced on the Day of Resurrection": that is, judgment will be passed on him and his case decided. "Allah made His blessing known to him": that is, Allah acquainted the servant with the blessing He had bestowed upon him in the worldly life.

A warning against ostentation, and that the first matters to be judged on the Day of Resurrection are deeds of ostentation, by exposing them, rebuking their doers, and disgracing them. Outward deeds alone do not suffice for salvation in the Hereafter; rather, sincerity and seeking the Face of Allah the Exalted are indispensable.
