عَنِ ابنِ عُمَرَ رضيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُما أنَّ نَاسًا قَالُوا لَهُ: إنَّا نَدْخُلُ عَلى سَلاطِيننا فَنَقُولُ لهُمْ بِخِلافِ مَا نَتَكَلَّمُ إذا خَرَجْنَا منْ عنْدِهمْ؟ قالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ رضي اللّه عنْهُمَا: كُنَّا نَعُدُّ هذا نِفَاقًا عَلى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم. رواه البخاري.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that some people said to him: "We enter upon our rulers and say to them the opposite of what we say once we have left them." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "We used to count this as hypocrisy in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Reported by al-Bukhari.

A warning against flattery and lying before rulers, for that is among the traits of hypocrisy.
