Jundub ibn Abdullah ibn Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever seeks to be heard of, Allah will make him heard of; and whoever shows off, Allah will show him up." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). Muslim also reported it through the narration of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).
"Seeks to be heard of": that is, he publicized his deed to people out of ostentation. "Allah will make him heard of": that is, Allah will expose him on the Day of Resurrection. "Whoever shows off": that is, whoever displays righteous deeds to people so as to be esteemed by them. "Allah will show him up": that is, Allah will reveal his inner secret before all creation.
