Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever learns knowledge by which the Face of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, ought to be sought, learning it only to attain thereby some worldly gain, will not [even] smell the fragrance of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection"—meaning its scent. Reported by Abu Dawud with a sahih (authentic) chain. The hadiths on this topic are many and well known.

A warning against abandoning sincerity to Allah the Exalted in seeking religious knowledge. Seeking worldly gain by means of religion is a cause for being deprived of the bliss of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection; yet this deprivation does not necessarily entail being barred from entering it, for that remains possible, just as the one who drank wine in this world is barred from drinking the wine of Paradise, and the one who wore silk in this world is barred from wearing it therein. The wisdom in depriving the one who sought knowledge for worldly gain of the scent of Paradise is that he confined his aspiration to the base and perishable, and exchanged the inferior for what is better; so it is fitting that he be denied what was prepared for those of lofty aspiration, as an added honor to them.
