Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The son of Adam has been assigned his share of adultery, which he will inevitably attain: the eyes commit adultery, and their adultery is looking; the ears commit adultery, and their adultery is listening; the tongue commits adultery, and its adultery is speech; the hand commits adultery, and its adultery is seizing; the foot commits adultery, and its adultery is walking [toward it]; the heart yearns and desires; and the private parts either confirm all of that or belie it." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). This is the wording of Muslim; the narration of al-Bukhari is abridged.

Guidance toward abandoning adultery and its incitements. Allah the Exalted said: "And do not approach adultery. Indeed, it is an immorality and an evil way" [Surah al-Isra': 32]. Each of the things mentioned was termed "adultery" because it is among its incitements; so it is a metaphorical application of the name of the effect (adultery) to the cause (the look and the like). The son of Adam has had his share of adultery decreed for him: for some it is actual adultery, and for others it is figurative, through the forbidden look and the like of what was mentioned, all of which are types of figurative adultery; and the private parts either confirm it or belie it, by [the act] either occurring or not occurring. The crime of fornication is not committed except after being preceded by preliminaries such as looking and speaking.
