عنْ أبي سعِيدٍ الخُدْرِيِّ رضي اللّه عنْهُ عَنِ النّبيّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قَالَ: «إيَّاكُمْ والجُلُوسَ في الطُّرُقَاتِ» قَالُوا: يَا رَسُول اللّه مالَنَا مِنْ مجالِسِنا بُدٌّ: نَتَحَدَّثُ فيها. فَقالَ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «فإذا أبَيْتُمْ إلّا المجْلِسَ، فأَعْطُوا الطَّرِيقَ حَقَّهُ» قَالُوا: ومَا حَقُّ الطَّرِيق يَا رَسُولَ اللّه؟ قَالَ: «غَضَّ البصر، وكَفُّ الأذَى، وردُّ السَّلامِ، والأمْرُ بِالمَعْرُوفِ والنَّهيُ عنِ المُنْكَرِ» متفقٌ عليه.
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of sitting in the roadways." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have no alternative to our gatherings, in which we converse." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you insist on the gathering, then give the road its due." They said: "And what is the due of the road, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Lowering the gaze, refraining from harm, returning the greeting, enjoining good, and forbidding evil." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

إياكم: أي احذروا وابتعدوا. مالنا من مجالسنا بد: لا نستطيع الاستغناء عن الجلوس فيها. غضّ البصر: كفّ البصر عن المحرمات. كفّ الأذى: ردّ الأذى ومنع وقوعه.
"Beware (iyyakum)": that is, be cautious and keep away. "We have no alternative to our gatherings": we cannot do without sitting in them. "Lowering the gaze": restraining the eye from forbidden things. "Refraining from harm": warding off harm and preventing its occurrence.

A warning against sitting on the edges of roads, because it is a likely occasion for falling into faults and sins. Public facilities are the property of the community, so no individual has the right to monopolize them; the Muslim must be ever active in spreading good and calling to it, and it is not permissible to obstruct the road for those passing by.
