عنْ أمِّ سَلَمةَ رضي اللّه عنْهَا قَالَتْ: كُنْتُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم وعِنْدَهُ مَيمونة، فَأَقْبَلَ ابنُ أمِّ مكتُوم، وذلكَ بعْدَ أنْ أُمِرْنَا بِالحِجابِ فَقَالَ النبيُّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «احْتَجِبا مِنْهُ» فَقُلْنَا: يا رَسُولَ اللّهِ ألَيْس هُوَ أعْمَى: لا يُبْصِرُنَا، ولا يعْرِفُنَا؟ فقَال النبيُّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «أفَعَمْياوَانِ أنْتُما ألَسْتُما تُبصِرانِهِ؟» رواه أبو داود والترمذي وقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حسنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Maymunah was with him, when Ibn Umm Maktum came forward—and this was after we had been commanded to observe the veil (hijab). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Veil yourselves from him." We said: "O Messenger of Allah, is he not blind—he neither sees us nor recognizes us?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you two [also] blind? Do you not see him?" Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.

ميمونة: هي بنت الحارث الهلالية زوج النبي صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم. ابن أم مكتوم: هو عمرو بن قيس مؤذن رسول اللّه صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم وهو ابن خال خديجة أم المؤمنين رضي اللّه عنها.
"Maymunah": she is bint al-Harith al-Hilaliyyah, a wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). "Ibn Umm Maktum": he is Amr ibn Qays, the muezzin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was the maternal cousin of Khadijah, the Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her).

أمر النبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم زوجتيه بالاحتجاب من الأعمى لكريم مقامهنّ رضي اللّه عنهنّ، أمّا غيرهنّ من النساء فلا يجب عليهنّ الاحتجاب لحضور الأعمى، لأنّ الحجاب من أجل النظر، وقد صح عن رسول اللّه صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم أنّه قال: إنّما جعل الاستئذان لأجل النظر. تحريم نظر المرأة الأجنبية إلى الرجل وقد ذهب جمع من العلماء إلى جواز ذلك إذا لم يترتب على ذلك مفسدة.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded his two wives to veil themselves from the blind man on account of their noble station (may Allah be pleased with them); as for other women, veiling is not obligatory upon them merely because of a blind man's presence, since the veil is on account of looking. It is authentically established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "Seeking permission [to enter] was ordained only on account of looking." The prohibition of a non-mahram woman looking at a man; though a group of scholars held it permissible when no harm results from it.
