عنِ ابنِ عبَّاسٍ رضي اللّه عنْهُما قَالَ: لَعَنَ رسُولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم المُخَنَّثين مِنَ الرِّجالِ، والمُتَرجِّلاتِ مِن النِّساءِ. وفي رواية: لَعنَ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم المُتَشبِّهين مِن الرِّجالِ بِالنساءِ، والمُتَشبِّهَات مِن النِّسَاءِ بِالرِّجالِ. رواه البخاري.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed effeminate men and masculine women." In another narration: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men." Reported by al-Bukhari.

المخنثين: المراد من يشابه النساء في أمورهن الخاصة بهن. المترجلات: أي النساء اللواتي يشابهن الرجال في أمورهم الخاصة بهم.
"Effeminate men (al-mukhannathin)": what is meant are those who resemble women in matters particular to them. "Masculine women (al-mutarajjilat)": that is, women who resemble men in matters particular to them.

أنّه يحرم على الرجال أن يتشبهوا بالنساء في الحركات ولين الكلام والزينة واللباس وغير ذلك من الأمور الخاصة بهنّ عادةً أو طبعًا، ويحرم على النساء أيضًا أن يتشبهن بالرجال في مثل ذلك. قال العلماء: اللعن في الحديث يدل على أنّ التشبه من الكبائر، والحكمة من التحريم أن المتشبه والمتشبهة كل منهما يخرج نفسه عن الفطرة والطبيعة التي وضعها أحكم الحكماء رب العالمين سبحانه وتعالى.
It is forbidden for men to imitate women in gestures, softness of speech, adornment, dress, and other matters particular to women by custom or nature; and it is likewise forbidden for women to imitate men in the like of that. The scholars said: the cursing in the hadith indicates that such imitation is among the major sins; and the wisdom behind the prohibition is that each imitator, male or female, removes himself from the natural disposition (fitrah) and nature ordained by the Wisest of the wise, the Lord of the worlds, Glorified and Exalted is He.
