On the authority of Abu Burdah, who said: Abu Musa al-Ashari (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill and lost consciousness, his head resting in the lap of a woman of his household. She began to cry out with a wailing shriek, and he was unable to say anything to her. When he came to, he said: I disown whomever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disowned. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disowned the woman who wails aloud, the woman who shaves her head, and the woman who tears her garment. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

Severe deterrence from these things, namely: raising the voice in wailing and lamentation over the dead, shaving or pulling out the hair and cutting it, or tearing the garments, or what some ignorant people do of letting the hair grow long and the like under the pretext of grief over the dead. That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disowned these things, which indicates the severity of their prohibition, and that they contradict the perfection of faith and contentment with Allah the Exalted's decree and destiny.
