Riyad Al Salihin

On the authority of Muawiyah ibn al-Hakam (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, I am recent in my ties to the Days of Ignorance, and Allah the Exalted has now brought Islam. Among us are men who go to the soothsayers? He said: "Then do not go to them." I said: And among us are men who take evil omens? He said: "That is something they find in their breasts, so let it not deter them." I said: And among us are men who draw lines? He said: "There was a prophet among the prophets who drew lines; so whoever's line coincides with his, that is permissible." Reported by Muslim.

"Go to the soothsayers": that is, they ask them about hidden matters. "That is something they find in their breasts": that is, an innate matter by natural disposition which they are not charged with removing. "So let it not deter them": let it not hinder them from doing what they have resolved upon; they are charged with not acting according to its dictate.

That the pessimism which comes over the Muslim at first instance is not held against him; rather he repels it and does not surrender to it or act according to its dictate. There is a kind of line-drawing that is not forbidden; apparently it is that which involves no claim to the unseen, but is rather knowing matters based on known premises and causes.
