عنْ أنَسٍ رضي اللّه عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «لا عَدْوَى ولا طِيَرَةَ ويُعْجِبُني الفألُ» قالوا: ومَا الْفَألُ؟ قَالَ: «كَلِمةٌ طيِّبَةٌ» متفقٌ عليه.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no contagion and no evil omen, but I like the good omen." They asked: "What is the good omen?" He said: "A good word." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

لا عدوى: نفي لانتقال المرض إلى الصحيح، أو هو نهي عن تسبب ذلك. لا طيرة: نهي بصيغة النفي أي لا تتشاءموا بالطير وغيره. الفأل: هو أن تسمع كلامًا حسنًا فتستبشر به. كلمة طيبة: كلام حسن يبعث في النفس التفاؤل والطمأنينة.
"No contagion": a negation that disease is transmitted to the healthy person, or it is a prohibition against being a cause of that. "No evil omen": a prohibition in the form of a negation, that is, do not regard birds and the like as bad omens. "The good omen": it is that you hear good speech and take it as a good sign. "A good word": pleasant speech that stirs optimism and reassurance in the soul.

النهي عن اعتقاد تأثير المرض بالصحيح رأسًا بسبب مخالطة المريض وأنّه لا أثر لشيء في شيء آخر إلّا بتقدير اللّه عز وجل. النهي عن التسبب بنقل المرض ومنه اختلاط الأصحاء بالمرضى لا سيما إذا ثبت أن الجرثوم يسري من شخص إلى آخر. النهي عن التشاؤم والحثّ على التفاؤل واستحبابه لما فيه من حسن الظنّ باللّه عزّ وجلّ. استحباب التكلّم بما يبعث في النفس البشرى والأمل والحثّ على استماعه وكراهة التكلّم بما يسوء النفس ويحملها على التشاؤم والتنفير من استماعه.
Prohibition of believing that disease directly affects the healthy person through mixing with the sick, and that nothing has any effect upon anything else except by the decree of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic). Prohibition of being a cause of transmitting disease, which includes the mixing of the healthy with the sick, especially when it is established that the germ passes from one person to another. Prohibition of pessimism and encouragement toward optimism and its recommendation, for it contains thinking well of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic). Recommendation of speaking with what stirs glad tidings and hope in the soul, and encouragement to listen to it; and the dislike of speaking with what troubles the soul and drives it to pessimism, and the dislike of listening to it.
