عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رضي اللّه عَنْهُما قَالَ: قَالَ رسُولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «لا عَدْوى وَلا طِيَرَةَ، وإنْ كَان الشُّؤمُ في شَيءٍ، فَفي الدَّارِ، والمَرْأةِ وَالفَرَسِ» متفقٌ عليه.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no contagion and no evil omen; but if there were any ill fortune in a thing, it would be in the house, the woman, and the horse." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

الشؤم: الشرّ، والتشاؤم توقع الشرّ مثل الطير.
"Ill fortune": evil; and pessimism is the expectation of evil, like taking omens from birds.

أنّ الشؤم قد يتوقع في الأمور المذكورة، فإذا تشاءم المرء من واحدة منها تركها واستبدل بها غيرها. وقالوا: شؤم المرأة إذا كانت غير ولود، وشؤم الفرس إذا لم يغز عليها، وشؤم الدار جار السوء. لا شؤم في غير ما ذكر في زمن أو مكان أو شيء من الأشياء مما يتشاءم منه أحيانًا بعض الناس.
Ill fortune may be expected in the matters mentioned, so if a person senses an ill omen from one of them, he leaves it and replaces it with another. They said: the ill fortune of a woman is when she is barren; the ill fortune of a horse is when it is not used for battle; and the ill fortune of a house is a bad neighbor. There is no ill fortune in anything other than what was mentioned, whether in a time, a place, or any of the things that some people at times regard as bad omens.
