عنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ عامِرٍ رضي اللّه عَنْهُ قَالَ: ذُكِرتِ الطِّيَرَةُ عِنْد رَسُولِ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم فقَالَ: «أحْسَنُهَا الْفَألُ، وَلا تَرُدُّ مُسْلِمًا، فَإذا رأى أحَدُكُمْ ما يَكْرَه، فَلْيقُلْ: اللَّهُمَّ لا يَأتي بالحَسَناتِ إلّا أنتَ، وَلا يَدْفَعُ السَّيِّئاتِ إلّا أنْتَ، وَلا حوْلَ وَلا قُوَّةَ إلّا بك» حديثٌ صَحيحٌ رَوَاهُ أبو داودُ بإسنادٍ صَحيحٍ.
Urwah ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that omens were mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "The best of it is the good omen, and it should not turn a Muslim back. So if one of you sees what he dislikes, let him say: 'O Allah, none brings good things but You, and none wards off evil things but You, and there is no might nor power except by You.'" A sahih (authentic) hadith, reported by Abu Dawud with a sahih chain.
الشرح · explanation
لا تردّ مسلمًا: أي لا يجعله التشاؤم من شيء ممّا لا شؤم فيه يرجع عمّا عزم على فعله. ما يكره: ما يطّيّر به الناس عادة. بالحسنات: ما يرضي النفس ويسرها. السيّئات: المكروهات للأنفس.
"It should not turn a Muslim back": that is, pessimism about something in which there is no ill fortune should not make him turn back from what he had resolved to do. "What he dislikes": that which people habitually take as an evil omen. "Good things": what pleases and gladdens the soul. "Evil things": the things disliked by souls.

من خلق المسلم التفاؤل وعدم التشاؤم. الاستعانة باللّه تعالى والالتجاء إليه لدفع شرّ ما يتوقع منه الشرّ، واستحضار معنى هذا الدعاء المذكور عند طروء ما يتشاءم منه الناس عادة، أو حصول شيء في النفس.
Part of the character of a Muslim is optimism and the absence of pessimism. Seeking the help of Allah the Exalted and taking refuge in Him to ward off the evil of that from which one fears evil, and bringing to mind the meaning of this supplication when there occurs something that people habitually take as an evil omen, or when something arises in the soul.
