عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رضي اللّه عَنْهُما أنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قَالَ: «إنَّ الَّذِين يَصْنَعونَ هذِهِ الصُّورَ يُعَذَّبُونَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، يُقَالُ لهُمْ: أحْيُوا مَا خَلَقْتُمْ» متفقٌ عليه.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those who make these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection; it will be said to them: 'Give life to what you have created.'" Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
هذه الصور: أي صور ذات الروح. أحيوا ما خلقتم: أي اجعلوا روحًا لما صنعتموه مشابهًا لخلق اللّه تعالى، والطلب للتعجيز.
"These images": that is, images of ensouled beings. "Give life to what you have created": that is, put a soul into what you have made in resemblance to the creation of Allah the Exalted; the demand is meant to expose their inability.

النهي الشديد والتحريم الأكيد لصنع الصور، حيث يُعذّب فاعلها يوم القيامة وهو يُطلب منه جعل الروح فيها، ولا قدرة له على ذلك البتة. إذا اقتضت الحاجة إلى التصوير في التعليم أو تشخيص المرض فإن في الأمر سعة، ولكن بشرط ألّا تُتّخذ هدفًا وغاية في ذاتها، فإنّ الضرورات تبيح المحظورات، والضرورة تقدر بقدرها، فما جاوزها إلى حدّ المباهاة بالتصوير فذلك حرام.
The severe prohibition and firm forbiddance of making images, since the one who does so is punished on the Day of Resurrection and is required to place a soul into them, while he has no power whatsoever to do so. If the need arises for image-making in teaching or in diagnosing an illness, then there is latitude in the matter, but on condition that it not be taken as an aim and end in itself, for necessities permit what is prohibited, and necessity is measured by its due extent; whatever exceeds this to the point of vain boasting through image-making is forbidden.
