Riyad Al Salihin

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog for hunting or for livestock, two qirats are deducted from his reward each day." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). In another narration: "one qirat."

"Keeps": from al-qinyah, which is taking a thing to keep and trade in. "Livestock": camels, sheep, and cattle; and the livestock dog is one taken to guard them. "Two qirats": the dual of qirat, which is one part out of twenty-four parts of a thing.

Keeping dogs without need diminishes the reward. The scholars have mentioned that the reason for this diminution is the difficulty of guarding against the impurity that dogs bring about, so the diminution may enter upon his worship by lessening its reward.
