Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever keeps a dog, a qirat is deducted from his deeds each day, except a dog for cultivation or for livestock." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). In a narration of Muslim: "Whoever keeps a dog that is not a dog for hunting, nor for livestock, nor for land, two qirats are deducted from his reward each day."

The prohibition of keeping dogs without need; and it is permissible to keep them for a need, such as hunting and guarding livestock, crops, and houses, if one needs that. It was said, in reconciling the narration of one qirat with the narration of two qirats: that it is according to the abundance or scarcity of the filth resulting from keeping them; or that it is according to cities and deserts, so the people of the cities have two qirats deducted from their reward, and the people of the deserts one qirat, because the likelihood of need among them is greater; and other explanations were given.
