Al-Sa'ib ibn Yazid, the Companion (may Allah be pleased with him), said: I was in the mosque when a man threw pebbles at me. I looked, and it was Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: "Go and bring me those two." So I brought them to him, and he said: "Where are you two from?" They said: "We are from the people of al-Ta'if." He said: "Had you been from the people of this city, I would have given you a painful beating. You raise your voices in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Reported by al-Bukhari.

"He threw pebbles at me (fa-hasabani)": he pelted me with al-hasba', which are small pebbles. "In the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)": it was singled out for mention to show its added merit over others, and the rest of the mosques share its ruling.

The dislike of raising one's voice in the mosque, even in remembrance or recitation of the Qur'an; and it becomes forbidden if it causes disturbance. The dislike and the prohibition intensify if it is in a dispute or the like. It is recommended for one who wishes to alert someone to something in the mosque to gesture to him or toss something at him so as not to raise his voice. Encouragement to enjoin good and forbid evil in the mosque and elsewhere, for it is among the greatest aims of Islam; this includes commanding and forbidding whoever violates the etiquette of the mosques. The permissibility of corporal punishment, by striking or otherwise, for whoever violates the law of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic). The houses of Allah the Exalted were made for obedience and worship, so they must be cared for.
