Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has an animal to sacrifice, once the crescent of Dhu al-Hijjah appears, let him not take anything from his hair or his nails until he has offered the sacrifice." Reported by Muslim.

Refraining from cutting the hair and nails upon the entry of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah for one who intends to offer a sacrifice, and the dislike of cutting them; it is said that among the wisdoms in this is that forgiveness may encompass all parts of his body at the time of sacrifice, like the sacrifice of the hady (offering) in the Hajj. If there is a need to cut the hair or a nail due to illness or an incidental wound, it is permissible to cut it.
