عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رضِيَ اللّه عنْهُمَا، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، قَالَ: «إِنَّ اللّه تَعالى ينْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بآبائِكُمْ، فَمَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا، فلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللّهِ، أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ» متفقٌ عليه. وفي رواية في الصحيح: «فمنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا، فَلا يَحْلِفْ إِلّا بِاللّهِ، أَوْ لِيسْكُتْ»
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said: "Indeed Allah the Exalted forbids you to swear by your fathers. Whoever must swear, let him swear by Allah, or remain silent." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). In another narration in the Sahih: "Whoever must swear, let him swear by nothing but Allah, or remain silent."

أنّ اليمين لا تكون إلّا باللّه تعالى، أو بصفة من صفاته كعلم اللّه وقدرته. تحريم الحلف بالآباء وبغيرهم من سائر المخلوقين، لأنّ الحلف تعظيم ولا يستحق التعظيم إلّا اللّه تبارك وتعالى.
That an oath may be taken only by Allah the Exalted, or by one of His attributes, such as Allah's knowledge and His power. The prohibition of swearing by fathers or by any other created being, because swearing is a form of veneration, and none deserves veneration except Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He).
