Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever swears an oath and then sees something better than it, let him make expiation for his oath and do that which is better." Reported by Muslim.

It is legislated for a Muslim, if he swears an oath by Allah the Exalted to do something or to leave it, and then it becomes clear to him that what he swore to do or to leave is not better for him, and that the good lies in its opposite — it is legislated for him to do what is better for him, and he must make expiation for his oath. The expiation of the oath: Allah the Exalted said: "Its expiation is the feeding of ten needy persons from the average of that which you feed your own families, or clothing them, or the freeing of a slave" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 89]. If he is unable to feed ten needy persons or clothe them, he fasts three days, due to His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He): "But whoever cannot find [the means] — then a fast of three days" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 89]; and it is preferable that they be consecutive.
