عَنْ جابرٍ رضِيَ اللّه عَنْهُ قَال: قالَ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «لا يُسْأَلُ بوَجْهِ اللّهِ إِلّا الجَنَّة» رواه أبو داود.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Nothing is to be asked by the Face of Allah except Paradise." Reported by Abu Dawud.
الشرح · explanation
لا يسأل: لا يطلب. بوجه اللّه: كأن يقول السائل: أسألك بوجه اللّه أن تعطيني كذا.
"is to be asked" (la yus'al): is not to be requested. "by the Face of Allah": as when the petitioner says, "I ask you by the Face of Allah to give me such-and-such."

The dislike of asking and seeking means (tawassul) by the Face of Allah the Exalted to attain some worldly gain. The permissibility of asking by the Face of Allah the Exalted for all that is of the blessings of the Hereafter.
