Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever seeks refuge with Allah, grant him refuge; whoever asks by Allah, give to him; whoever invites you, respond to him; and whoever does you a kindness, repay him. But if you do not find that with which to repay him, then supplicate for him until you see that you have [truly] repaid him." A sahih (authentic) hadith, reported by Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i with chains meeting the standard of the two Sahihs.
الشرح · explanation

"seeks refuge" (ista'adha): asks by Allah to be protected and shielded from something. "grant him refuge" (fa-a'idhuhu): then protect him. "repay him" (kafi'uhu): requite his kindness with the like of it or with something better.

Encouragement to respond to whoever seeks refuge with Allah the Exalted, by protecting and sheltering him. Asking by Allah the Exalted differs in its ruling according to the petitioner's knowledge of the one asked: if he knows that the one asked, when asked by Allah the Exalted, will be moved in his feelings and will hasten to give and to seize [the opportunity of] nearness to Him (Glorified is He), then it is permissible for him to ask him; but otherwise it is better to leave it, because of what it involves of using the name of Allah the Exalted for a worldly aim. It is part of the character of the Muslim to requite kindness with kindness and to acknowledge a favor, even if only by supplication.
