عَنْ أَبي هُريْرَةَ رضِيَ اللّه عَنْهُ عن النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «إِنَّ أَخْنَعَ اسمٍ عندَ اللّهِ عزَّ وجَلَّ رَجُلٌ تَسَمَّى مَلِكَ الأَملاكِ» متفق عَلَيه.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "Indeed, the most despicable name before Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) is [that of] a man who named himself 'King of Kings.'" Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
أخنع: أذلّ. تسمّى: سمّى نفسه أو سماه غيره وأقرّه. مَلِكُ الأَمْلاكِ: مِثْلُ شاهِنشَاهِ.
"most despicable" (akhna'): most abased and lowly. "named himself" (tasammaa): named himself, or another named him and he approved it. "King of Kings" (Malik al-Amlak): like "Shahanshah" (Persian for king of kings).
