Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not call the hypocrite 'master' (sayyid), for if he is [truly] a master, then you have angered your Lord (the Mighty and Majestic)." Reported by Abu Dawud with a sahih (authentic) chain.
"if he is a master": that is, elevated in rank above others. "you have angered your Lord": you have provoked His wrath. That is: if this becomes your way, and you take the hypocrites as masters and chiefs over you, and grant them the say among you, then you have angered Allah against yourselves and have deserved His displeasure with you.

The prohibition of describing the hypocrite with attributes of respect and esteem; describing him thus invites the wrath of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic), because it is an exaltation of His enemy who has departed from His obedience and who deserves humiliation and contempt. Joined to the hypocrite are the transgressor (fasiq), the disbeliever, the polytheist, the atheist, and the innovator who opposes the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). None deserves respect and esteem except one who humbles himself before Allah the Exalted through obedience to Him and adheres to His limits.
