Abu al-Mundhir Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not revile the wind. When you see what you dislike, then say: 'O Allah, we ask You for the good of this wind, and the good of what is in it, and the good of what it has been commanded with; and we seek refuge in You from the evil of this wind, and the evil of what is in it, and the evil of what it has been commanded with.'" Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.
"what you dislike": that is, of its gusting and violence. "the good of this wind": that is, what arises from it, such as the gathering of clouds that bring rain. "the good of what is in it": the good that lies within it, such as the propelling of ships and the like. "we seek refuge" (na'udhu): we seek protection. "the evil of this wind": due to its being a gale or a destructive wind. "the evil of what is in it": of destruction and other harms. "what it has been commanded with": of destroying what it passes over, like the wind of [the people of] 'Ad, which did not pass over anything without making it like decayed ruins.
