عَن ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللّه عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «لَيْس المُؤْمِنُ بالطَّعَّانِ، وَلا اللَّعَّانِ، وَلا الْفَاحِشِ، وَلا الْبَذِيء» رواه الترمذي وقال: حديثٌ حسنٌ.
Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The believer is not one who taunts, nor one who curses, nor one who is obscene, nor one who is vulgar." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.

ليس المؤمن: أي الكامل الإيمان. الطعّان: الطعن هو القدح والعيب في الأنساب وغيرها. اللعّان: اللعن هو الطرد من رحمة الله تعالى، والمراد أن يحكم على الآخرين باللعن. الفاحش: الفحش هو القول السيء والقبيح
"The believer is not": that is, the one perfect in faith. "The taunter (al-ta''an)": taunting is disparaging and finding fault with lineages and other things. "The curser (al-la''an)": cursing is expulsion from the mercy of Allah, Exalted is He; what is meant is to invoke curses upon others. "The obscene (al-fahish)": obscenity is evil and foul speech.

Perfection of faith lies in casting off blameworthy traits and adorning oneself with noble character. A call to keep far from cursing, taunting, reviling, insulting, and foul speech, and [an indication] that engaging in such things is a sign of deficient faith.
