Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed Allah detests the eloquent man who rolls his tongue [around words] as a cow rolls [its fodder with its tongue]." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.
"Who rolls his tongue as a cow rolls [its tongue]": that is, the one who speaks affectedly, twisting his tongue in speech and winding it about, as a cow winds fodder around its tongue.
A Muslim should speak in a moderate, ordinary manner that the listener understands and by which the intended meaning is conveyed; affected, over-refined speech is disliked.
