Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not say, 'What Allah wills and what so-and-so wills,' but rather say, 'What Allah wills, then what so-and-so wills.'" Reported by Abu Dawud with a sahih (authentic) chain.

It is disliked to join a person's will to the will of Allah, Exalted is He, with "and" (waw), because of the false notion it gives of partnership in [the moment of] willing, whereas the difference between the two is vast: Allah's will is eternal and pre-existent, while the servant's will is contingent and originated. There is no dislike in joining with "then" (thumma), because it is set for sequence—meaning that what it joins, namely the person's will here, comes only after that to which it is joined, namely Allah's will. Attention must be drawn to the need to correct people's expressions such as "We have none but Allah and you," and "We rely on Allah and on you," and similar phrases, so that they are said with "then" (thumma) instead of "and" (waw).
