Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "There is no prayer in the presence of food, nor while one is being pressed by the two impurities (al-akhbathan)." Reported by Muslim.
"There is no prayer (la salata)": a negation carrying the meaning of prohibition, that is, let no one pray [in such a state]; or what is meant is the negation of [its] perfection. "Being pressed by the two impurities (al-akhbathan)": that is, needing to urinate or defecate.
It is disliked to pray for one who is hungry or thirsty when food or drink is present—or what is in the meaning of its presence—until he eats and drinks, because of the loss of humility and the heart's preoccupation with other than the prayer that this entails. It is disliked to pray for one who needs to urinate or defecate until he relieves himself and finds ease, because of the disturbance of mind and self that this causes, which prevents humility in prayer. This dislike applies when there is ample time [for the prayer], and it is lifted when the time is short.
