Riyad Al Salihin

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Beware of turning aside during prayer, for turning aside during prayer is ruin; but if it is unavoidable, then let it be in voluntary prayer, not in the obligatory one." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.

The disapproval of turning aside during prayer, since it indicates heedlessness and a deficiency in humble submission, which is why it is a snatching by Satan. Satan seizes upon the worshipper's heedlessness. Turning aside during prayer is also a cause of ruin, for it involves turning away from Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) while worshipping Him and yielding to Satan's whispering. Making light of disliked acts and falling into them leads to falling into forbidden acts and exposing oneself to punishment. Turning aside with the face is not forbidden, because it does not involve abandoning a pillar or condition, nor performing an act that nullifies the prayer or is forbidden within it. If turning aside is for a valid reason, there is no disapproval. It has been reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out a scout at night against the enemy at [the Battle of] Hunayn, and when he prayed the dawn prayer he turned aside during it on his account. Turning aside in voluntary prayers is less disapproved, because the Sacred Law's concern for and attention to the obligatory prayers is greater than its concern for the supererogatory ones. All of the above applies when the turning is with the face; but if it is with the chest, it is forbidden and nullifies the prayer, because it violates one of the prayer's conditions, namely facing the qiblah.
