عَنْ أَبي هُرَيْرة رضَيَ اللّه عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يَقُولُ: «لا يَصُومَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ يَوْمَ الجُمُعَةِ إِلّا يَوْمًا قَبْلَهُ أَوْ بَعْدَهُ» متفقٌ عليه.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "None of you should fast on Friday unless he fasts a day before it or a day after it." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
إلا يومًا قبله أو بعده: أي إلّا أن يصوم معه يومًا قبله وهو الخميس أو يومًا بعده وهو السبت.
"Unless a day before it or after it": that is, unless he fasts along with it a day before it, namely Thursday, or a day after it, namely Saturday.

تنتفي كراهة صوم يوم الجمعة في حالتين: أن يوافق يوم الجمعة سببًا مشروعًا كنذر أو من عشر ذي الحجة أو عرفة أو غير ذلك. أن ينضم له صوم يوم الخميس قبله أو صوم يوم السبت بعده.
The disapproval of fasting on Friday is removed in two cases: That Friday coincides with a legitimate reason, such as a vow, or its being one of the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, or the day of Arafah, or the like. That the fast of Thursday before it or the fast of Saturday after it is joined to it.
