عَنْ أنسٍ رضي اللّه عَنْهُ قالَ: نَهَى النّبيّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم أنْ يَتَزَعْفَر الرَّجُلُ. متفقٌ عليه.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a man to apply saffron to himself. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
يتزعفر: يصبغ ثوبه بالزعفران، أو يطلي جسمه به. والزعفران: نبت يصبغ به ذو لون أصفر.
"Applies saffron to himself" (yatazaffar): he dyes his garment with saffron, or smears his body with it. Saffron: a yellow-colored plant used as a dye.

Islam came forbidding everything by which a man imitates a woman. The reason for the prohibition is that such garments are among what women adorn themselves with, and it is not permissible to imitate women.
