Qays ibn Abi Hazim reported: Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) went in to a woman of (the tribe of) Ahmas called Zaynab, and he saw that she would not speak. He asked: Why does she not speak? They said: She has performed Hajj in silence. So he said to her: Speak, for this is not permissible; this is one of the practices of the Jahiliyyah. So she spoke. Reported by al-Bukhari.

Whoever vows to refrain from speech altogether is not bound to fulfill it, because it contradicts the commands of the Sacred Law. Permissible speech that contains no backbiting or tale-bearing is lawful, and it is better than the imposed silence forbidden in the hadith.
