Yazid ibn Sharik ibn Tariq reported: I saw Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) on the pulpit delivering a sermon, and I heard him say: No, by Allah, we have no book that we read except the Book of Allah and what is in this scroll—then he unrolled it, and in it were (the rules concerning) the ages of camels (for blood-money) and some matters of wounds. And in it was: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Medina is a sanctuary (haram) from Ayr to Thawr. Whoever introduces into it an innovation or gives shelter to an innovator, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people; Allah will accept from him on the Day of Resurrection neither repentance nor ransom. The protection granted by the Muslims is one; the least of them may extend it. Whoever betrays a Muslim's pledge of protection, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people; Allah will accept from him on the Day of Resurrection neither repentance nor ransom. And whoever claims to belong to someone other than his father, or ascribes himself to other than his masters (patrons), upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people; Allah will accept from him on the Day of Resurrection neither repentance nor ransom." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

The grave prohibition of a person ascribing his lineage to other than his father, and of a freed slave ascribing himself to other than the one who freed him, because of the ingratitude for blessing and the loss of the rights of inheritance and patronage (wala) involved in that. The refutation of anyone who claims that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) singled out Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) with knowledge not disclosed to any other Companion, or that he entrusted the caliphate to him. The gravity of sin committed in Medina; it is even said that a minor sin, when committed in Medina, becomes a major one. The permissibility of cursing the perpetrators of major sins in general, without specifying a particular individual. Whoever dies upon these sins without repenting from them, while deeming them lawful, Allah will accept from him on the Day of Resurrection neither an obligatory nor a voluntary deed.
