عَنْ أبي هُريْرَةَ رضي اللّه عَنْهُ قالَ: قال رَسُولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «والذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِه لا تَذْهَبُ الدُّنْيَا حَتَّى يَمُرَّ الرَّجُلُ بالْقَبْرِ، فيتمَرَّغَ عَلَيْهِ، ويقولُ: يَا لَيْتَني مَكَانَ صَاحِبِ هذا الْقَبْرِ، وَلَيْس بِهِ الدِّين وما به إلّا الْبَلاءُ». متفقٌ عليه.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, the world will not pass away until a man passes by a grave, rolls upon it, and says: 'Would that I were in the place of the occupant of this grave' — not on account of religion, but only because of the affliction that has befallen him." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
يتمرغ: يتقلب. وليس به الدِّين: أي لا يتمنى الموت لأمر أصابه من جهة الدِّين وإنّما لما به من المصائب والمحن من جهة الدنيا.
"Rolls upon it": he tumbles about upon it. "Not on account of religion": that is, he does not wish for death because of some matter affecting his religion, but only because of the calamities and trials that afflict him in worldly affairs.
