عَنْ أبي هُريْرَةَ رضي اللّه عَنْهُ قال: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يَقُولُ: «يَتْرُكُونَ المَدينَةَ عَلى خَيْرِ مَا كَانَتْ، لا يَغْشَاهَا إلّا الْعوَافي - يُرِيدُ عَوَافي السِّباعِ وَالطَّيْرِ- وَآخِر مَنْ يُحْشَرُ رَاعِيانِ مِنْ مُزَيْنَةَ يُريدَانِ المَدينَةَ ينْعِقَانِ بِغَنَمها فَيَجدَانها وُحُوشًا، حتَّى إذا بَلَغَا ثنِيَّةَ الْودَاعِ خَرَّا على وَجوهِهمَا » متفقٌ عليه.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "They will leave Medina in the best state it ever was, none frequenting it but the wild creatures" — meaning the beasts of prey and the birds — "and the last to be gathered will be two shepherds from Muzaynah heading toward Medina, calling out to their sheep; but they will find it given over to wild beasts, until when they reach Thaniyyat al-Wada' they will fall upon their faces (dead)." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

لا يغشاها: لا يقصدها. ينعقان: يصيحان. وحوشًا: خالية ليس بها أحد، أو يجدانها ذات وحوش لخلو الناس منها. ثنيّة الوداع: مكان في المدينة يخرج إليه المشيعون للمسافر ليودعوه. خرّا على وجوههما: سقطا ميّتين.
"None frequents it": none heads for it. "Calling out": they shout and call. "Wild beasts": empty, with no one in it; or they find it full of wild beasts because it is devoid of people. "Thaniyyat al-Wada'": a place in Medina to which those seeing off a traveler go out to bid him farewell. "They fell upon their faces": they fell down dead.

الإخبار عن أمر مستقبل وهو أمر غيبي، وهذا من علم النبوّة وخبر من أخبار الغيب. أنّ الناس قرب قيام الساعة سوف يهجرون المدينة ويهاجرون إلى غيرها من البلاد طلبًا لشهواتهم وهي يومئذ خير البلاد وأطيبها. هٰذه من معجزاته صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم، فقد تركت المدينة على أحسن ما كانت حين نقلت الخلافة إلى الشام والعراق وذلك الوقت أحسن ما كانت المدينة للدين والدنيا.
The informing of a future matter, which is an unseen affair; this is from the knowledge of prophethood and among the reports of the unseen. That people near the establishment of the Hour will abandon Medina and migrate to other lands in pursuit of their desires, though it on that day is the best and most wholesome of lands. This is among his miracles (peace and blessings be upon him); Medina was left in the best state it had ever been when the caliphate was transferred to Sham and Iraq, and that time was the best that Medina had been for religion and worldly life.
