عَنْ جابرٍ رضي اللّه عنْهُ قال: كانَ جِذْعٌ يقُومُ إلَيْهِ النبيّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، يعْني في الخُطْبَةِ، فَلَما وُضِعَ المِنْبرُ، سَمِعْنَا لِلْجذْعِ مثْل صوْتِ العِشَارِ حَتَّى نَزَلَ النبيّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم فَوضَع يدَه عليْهٍ فسَكَنَ. وفي روايةٍ: فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَومُ الجمُعة قَعَدَ النبيّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم على المِنْبَرِ، فصاحتِ النَّخْلَةُ التي كَانَ يخْطُبُ عِنْدَهَا حَتَّى كَادَتْ أنْ تَنْشَقَّ. وفي روايةٍ: فَصَاحَتْ صياح الصَّبيِّ، فَنَزَلَ النَّبيُّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، حتَّى أخذَهَا فَضَمَّهَا إلَيْهِ، فَجَعلَتْ تَئِنُّ أنِينَ الصَّبيِّ الَّذي يُسكَّتُ حَتَّى اسْتَقرَّتْ، قال: «بكت عَلى ما كَانَتْ تسمعُ مِنَ الذِّكْرِ» رواه البخاريُّ.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There was a palm-trunk against which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to stand — meaning during the sermon. When the pulpit was made, we heard from the trunk a sound like that of pregnant she-camels, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came down and placed his hand upon it, and it became quiet. In another narration: When it was Friday, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat upon the pulpit, and the palm tree beside which he used to give the sermon cried out until it almost split apart. In another narration: It cried like a child, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came down, took it, and embraced it. It began to moan like a child being quieted, until it settled. He said: "It wept for the remembrance of Allah it used to hear." Reported by al-Bukhari.

جذع: ساق النخلة. وضع المنبر: أي وضع في مسجد النبيّ صَلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم، وقيل: كان ذلك في سنة سبع بعد الهجرة، وقيل: سنة ثمان. العشار: جمع عُشراء، وهي الناقة التي انتهت في حملها إلى عشرة أشهر. تئنّ: تصوّت.
"Trunk": the stem of the palm tree. "The pulpit was made": that is, placed in the mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); it is said this was in the seventh year after the Hijrah, and it is said the eighth. "al-'ishar": the plural of 'ushara', which is the she-camel that has reached ten months in her pregnancy. "Moans": it makes a sound.

In the hadith is an indication that Allah may create in inanimate objects a perception like that of an animal, indeed like the noblest of animals. This hadith is a miracle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The story of the yearning of the palm-trunk is among the well-known matters transmitted by the later generations from the earlier ones.
