عنْ عَبدِ اللّهِ بن أبي أوْفى رضي اللّه عَنْهُمَا قال: غَزَوْنَا مع رَسُولِ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم سَبْعَ غَزَوَاتٍ نَأكُلُ الجرادَ. وفي روايةٍ: نَأْكُلُ معهُ الجَراد، متفقٌ عليه.
Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: We went on military expeditions with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) — seven expeditions — eating locusts. In another narration: We ate locusts with him. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

الجراد: سمي جرادًا لأنه يجرد الأرض فيأكل ما عليها.
"The locust" (al-jarad): it is called jarad because it strips (yajrud) the earth, eating what is upon it.
