عَنْ عاصِم الأحْوَلِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللّه بنِ سَرْجِسَ رضي اللّه عَنْهُ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِرَسُولِ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: يَا رَسُولَ اللّه غَفَرَ اللّه لكَ، قَالَ: «وَلَكَ» قَالَ عَاصِمٌ: فَقلْتُ لَهُ: اسْتَغْفَرَ لَكَ رَسُولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ وَلَكَ، ثُمَّ تَلا هَذه الآيةَ: واستغفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ ولِلْمُؤمِنِينَ والمُؤْمِناتِ [محمد: ١٩] رَواهُ مُسلم.
Asim al-Ahwal reported from Abdullah ibn Sarjis (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah, may Allah forgive you." He said: "And you." Asim said: I asked him: "Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ask forgiveness for you?" He said: "Yes, and for you." Then he recited this verse: "And ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women" [Surah Muhammad: 19]. Reported by Muslim.

The legitimacy of supplicating for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with forgiveness; this is an expression of Allah's exalting His Prophet and His care for him, for he is protected from sin (maʿsum) and thus has no sin. A demonstration of the noble character of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), in that he returns a good deed with its like.
