Abu Masud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among what people have grasped from the words of the earliest prophethood is: If you have no shame, then do as you wish." Reported by al-Bukhari.
"Among what people have grasped from the words of the earliest prophethood": that is, among what has reached them of the teachings of the prophets before our master Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

That whoever has the trait of modesty (hayaʾ) stripped from him has made permissible for himself the doing of anything, whether lawful or unlawful, since there is then no deterrent to restrain him; it is a command in the meaning of a statement (khabar). It is said: it is a command in the sense of a threat; and it is said the meaning is: if you intend to do a thing, then if it is something of which one need not be ashamed before Allah or before people, do it; otherwise do not—so on this interpretation the command is for permissibility (ibahah).
