عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بنِ عامِر رضي اللّه عنْهُ أنَّ رسُولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم خَرجَ إلَى قَتْلَى أُحُدٍ فَصلَّى علَيْهِمْ بعْد ثَمان سِنِين كالمودِّع للأحْياءِ والأمْواتِ، ثُمَّ طَلَعَ إلى المِنْبر، فَقَالَ: «إنِّي بيْنَ أيْدِيكُمْ فَرَطٌ وأنَا شهيد علَيْكُم وإنَّ موْعِدَكُمُ الْحوْضُ، وَإنِّي لأنْظُرُ إليه مِنْ مَقامِي هَذَا، وإنِّي لَسْتُ أخْشَى عَلَيْكُم أنْ تُشْركُوا، ولَكِنْ أخْشَى عَلَيْكُم الدُّنيا أنْ تَنَافَسُوهَا» قَالَ: فَكَانَتْ آخِرَ نَظْرَةٍ نَظَرْتُهَا إلَى رَسُولِ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، متفقٌ عليه. وفي روايةٍ: «وَلَكِنِّي أخْشَى علَيْكُم الدُّنيَا أنْ تَنَافَسُوا فِيهَا، وتَقْتَتِلُوا فَتَهْلِكُوا كَما هَلَكَ منْ كَان قَبْلكُم» قَالَ عُقبةُ: فَكانَ آخِر ما رَأيْتُ رَسُولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم عَلَى المِنْبرِ. وفي روَايةٍ قال: «إنِّي فَرطٌ لَكُمْ وأنَا شَهِيدٌ علَيْكُم، وَإنِّي واللّه لأنْظُرُ إلَى حَوْضِي الآنَ، وإنِّي أُعْطِيتُ مَفَاتِيحَ خَزَائِن الأرضِ، أوْ مَفَاتِيحَ الأرْضِ، وَإنَّي واللّهِ مَا أَخَافُ علَيْكُم أنْ تُشْرِكُوا بعْدِي ولَكِنْ أخَافُ علَيْكُم أنْ تَنَافَسُوا فِيهَا».
Uqbah ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to the slain of Uhud and prayed over them after eight years, as one bidding farewell to the living and the dead. Then he ascended the pulpit and said: "I am your forerunner, and I am a witness over you. Your appointed meeting is at the Basin (al-Hawd), and indeed I am looking at it from this station of mine. I do not fear for you that you will associate partners with Allah, but I fear for you the world, that you will vie with one another over it." He said: That was the last time I looked upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Agreed upon. In another narration: "But I fear for you the world, that you will compete with one another over it, and fight one another and perish as those before you perished." Uqbah said: That was the last time I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) upon the pulpit. In another narration he said: "I am your forerunner, and I am a witness over you. By Allah, I am looking at my Basin now, and I have been given the keys of the treasures of the earth"—or "the keys of the earth"—"and by Allah, I do not fear for you that you will associate partners after me, but I fear for you that you will vie with one another over it."

الصَّلاة عَلَى قَتْلَى أُحُدٍ: المُرادُ الدُّعَاءُ لَهُمْ، لا الصَّلاةُ المعْرُوفَةُ. فرط: أي سابق لكم عَلَى الْحَوْضِ.
"Praying over the slain of Uhud": what is meant is supplication for them, not the well-known funeral prayer. "Forerunner (farat)": that is, one who precedes you to the Basin.

The affirmation of unveiling (kashf) for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in that he beheld his Basin in Paradise from his station in this world. The affirmation of the Basin (al-Hawd). Glad tidings of the endurance of Islam and the steadfastness of the Muslims upon it as a whole. The prohibition of vying with one another over the world. The permissibility of visiting graves and supplicating for their occupants. The asceticism of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) toward the world, despite Allah's granting him its reins and opening its doors to him; yet he preferred the everlasting over the perishing.
