عنْ أُمِّ شَرِيكٍ رضي اللّه عنْهَا أنّ رسُول اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم أمرَهَا بِقَتْلِ الأوزَاغِ، وقَال: «كَانَ ينْفُخُ علَى إبْراهيمَ» متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Umm Sharik (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded her to kill geckos, and said: "It used to blow on the fire against Ibrahim." Agreed upon.
الشرح · explanation
الأوزاغ: جمع وزغة: وهي حشرة مؤذية، (أبو بريص)، وسميت بالوزغ لخفّتها وسرعة حركتها.
Al-awzagh: the plural of wazaghah, which is a harmful creature (the gecko, abu buras); it is called wazagh on account of its lightness and swiftness of movement.

قتل الوزغ نسبة لخبثه وأذيته لإبراهيم عليه السلام. إنّ قتل الأوزاغ ليس لأجل جريرة واحد منها في عهد غابر، وإنّما لأجل أنّها مؤذية بطبعها تفسد الطعام وتسمّ الإنسان فاقتضى ذلك قتلها.
Killing the gecko on account of its noxiousness and its harm to Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Killing geckos is not because of the offense of one of them in a bygone age, but rather because they are harmful by nature, spoiling food and poisoning people, so that warrants killing them.
