عنْ أَبي هُريْرة رضِي اللّه عنْهُ قَال: سمِعْتُ رسُول اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يقُولُ: «واللّهِ إِنِّي لأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّه وأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ في الْيَوْمِ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ سبْعِينَ مَرَّةً» رواه البخاري.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "By Allah, indeed I seek Allah's forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day." Reported by al-Bukhari.
الشرح · explanation
أَكْثَرَ مِنْ سبْعِينَ مَرَّةً: فالعدد المرادُ مِنه الإشارةُ للكثرةِ وليس المرادُ الحَصرَ فيه.
"More than seventy times": the number is intended to indicate abundance, and not to be taken as a precise limit.

The encouragement to seek forgiveness abundantly, following the example of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Seeking forgiveness has no value unless it is accompanied by desisting from the sin.
